How to get there:

From Boon Lay MRT station,
Take either 179 or 199 from the bus interchange.

For 179: Alight after you go past SIMTech Block (on your left) and NIE (on your right) The bus stop you alight at would have an overhead bridge (that's the only one inside)

For 199: After you have seen Nanyang Playhouse on your left and alight at the bus stop with the overhead bridge.

Climb up the overhead bridge and walk straight. By then you should have seen a 7-11 slightly over to your left. Walk towards that direction and walk straight all the way through the carpark. Nanyang Auditorium would be at the end on your right.

Hi. i am here to promote some band vids. SEE ALR AND GET INSPIRED TO DO WELL!
people our age are almost trice (or more) as pro alr. so we must buck up. =)

Remember! No one will notice if you can play a song. BUT if you can play it well, everyone will notice.

We should be trying to play music,
feel the music, the feeling it is meant to give, submerge yourself into the music, listen and play, with emotions. Playing normal notes will only get you so far. It is nothing special.
We should not be only aiming to be able to play the notes written in the scores.

We must go beyond the normal, music is not just air and fingering and notes on a paper, but with feelings and hard work, too.
And these feelings and hardwork usually makes all the difference. so try! =)

- 1 full PE attire for Day 1 afternoon activities. (this set of clothes will get very dirty I think)
- 1 set of half uniform, PE shirt and school pants/shorts/skirt. (Or band tee if you have two band tees)
- 1 set of home attire for Day 1 evening till Day 2 wake up.
- Undergarments: Sufficient for your own usage.

NOTE: SEC 1 REGISTRATION ATTIRE IS FULL BAND UNIFORM. So please do a check to make sure your uniform is in proper condition, if you find any problems (the gold chain broke or button drop) inform any of the 3 quartermasters or me ASAP.

And of course, remember to bring back your instruments, stands, oils, files, scores and etc., there will be band practice during the camp =)

Philharmonic Youth Winds in Classiques! (EXTREME)

Synopsis
Join the Philharmonic Youth Winds in their annual concert as they present a programme that is both extremely challenging and emotionally stirring.

Led by Resident Conductor Adrian Chiang, the 80-piece wind orchestra will kickstart the concert with Tchaikovsky’s March Slave, Op. 31.

Local clarinettists, Desmond Chow and Liang Jiayi, both from The Philharmonic Winds, will take centrestage as they are accompanied by the youths in Mendelssohn’s Concert Piece No. 2, Op. 114, transcribed for Two Clarinets and Wind Orchestra.

Johan De Meij’s Extreme Make-over will dazzle with its series of musical metamorphoses based on a theme from Tchaikovsky’s well-known Andante Cantabile from the second movement of his String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11.

To end off the concert, the Philharmonic Youth Winds will perform James Barnes' emotionally stirring Symphony No. 3 “The Tragic”, which was written during the period between the death of his infant child Natalie and the birth of his son Billy, a journey from darkness to light.

SYF'S OVER. Even though we finally have the time to rest, but we all have our lessons to learn from today.

Let this SYF be an important learning point, do not just forget and get over it. Surely all of us made errors, but do not diss them as one-time errors or nervousness. Our musical journey does not end at SYF so please do continue to improve our playing as a band. So let's all have a change of mindset, instead of being too disappointed with our playing today, we should be motivated to ascend to even greater heights as a band. Most of all, everytime you play your passion has to be poured into it and enjoy the music we make.

Let's accept the silver we have been awarded with as professional musicians humbly. Have a good break and be prepared to work even harder for a successful Inspiration II! =)

Everyone, i think we did very well today, the music was great and you all were really feeling the music, all the passion, all the determination, it could all be felt in the music, so don't be disappointed or blame yourself, i'm sure we just missed it by a bit and its cause of a few minor mistakes. Our band made the music come to life, and you all enjoyed yourself playing, that is the most important, and to me, that makes us the best band ever regardless of whatever we got!

Dear All,

All the best for the upcoming SYF!
I know all of you are feeling jittery now, this being your first/last competition. But please know, and more importantly believe, that we can do it! All of you are significant members of our SYF band. Be it 1st, 2nd or 3rd clarinetists, junior or senior, without any of you, we would not be half as strong as we are now. As Ms Chong has often said, our band is only as strong as its weakest player. Even the most weak and seemingly insignificant person is a deciding factor of the band's fate, so imagine just how vital and essential your role in the band is.

I think all of us are faring pretty well, and we as all bands do, face certain hiccups in our music , such as squeaking, articulation, intonation, dynamics and so on. But we HAVE to take these small little problems into consideration and work very hard in these remaining days to solve it with our utmost effort, and not choose to ignore it or treat it with utter nonchalance. These are the deciding factors between a Silver band and a Gold band, and I am very certain that we are all aiming to be the latter. We only have less than a week before we will be judged. I think the most important question we need to ask ourselves is, how badly do we want the Gold??

If we want it, we have to bravely face our problems and not back away from them. Bring your clarinets home if need be, and practice and practice until you get everything right! If you really WANT something, NOBODY can ever stand in your path permanently. Yes, you will face a lot of adversities along the way, but you can and will overcome them eventually. And when you've finally accomplished your aim, all your hard work will be worth the while.

I know all of us have our own personal problems and issues to handle besides SYF, and perhaps these problems may seem more potent and pressing. But think of all the people and the friends you have been working with for months on end in Band, surely you would not want to disappoint them? Just for these five days, focus with all you have on the SYF. We only get a few minutes to prove our worth to the judges and to the school. Focus on the Gold, focus on the elation and pride you would experience when we do manage to clinch it. For majority of us, this would be our one and only chance to gain glory for the school, for the Band, for Ms Chong(who has been trying very hard), and ultimately for ourselves. I am sure we would not like to disappoint so many people by not putting in our best.

So let's fight our way there earnestly and sincerely and do it with determination and perseverance. We can do this, and we will aim for a Gold together as a Band. This is the final lap, and the most crucial one too. Put your all into your music, express yourselves, play with feel and with the aim of making your music touching to the audience- let them feel what you feel through it. Do your best to watch Ms Chong, do not play happily at your own tempo, and read her thoughts and gestures to see what she wants from you to improve the music. Follow dynamics(especially for Star of Dreams) and articulation(for Overture No.1). Refine your tones. But most importantly, ENJOY the music; enjoy its tune, enjoy its style, its rhythm, and revel in the fact that you are the ones creating it.
So which would you choose? A Gold or a Silver? Sad tears or happy, triumphant tears?
A trip overseas or another monotonous year in school? Joy, or regret?

I think it is high time we all made a decision. The outcome of this competition lies in your hands. Will you simply destroy it and make everyone's efforts come to naught, or will you work hard for the best outcome possible?
I hope our decisions would be unselfish and beneficial to the Band as a whole.
So let's all strive towards our common goal.
After all, it's All for One, and One for All!

1) Bonding time is a time for all bands to break up into different sections and talk about their set piece/ share their difficulties encountered while playing their SYF pieces or useful techniques. Each section will be given a specific corner in TKSS hall to carry out this event. Percussion section will have it on stage.

2) Band leaders’ speech will be the 2-3mins “talk” stated in front.

3) After the band finishes playing their pieces, conductors are allowed to share their views about that band’s performance before the next band takes stage.

4) TKSS will only be providing those percussion instruments provided on the SYF day itself, similar to the SYF set up too. Please bring the rest of your instruments needed yourself.

5) There will be space for each band to put their percussion instruments, as well as those bigger instruments (tubas, euphoniums, lower woodwinds, saxophones and trombones) while they are watching other bands perform.

This eight edition of the festival brings you a diverse repertoire from three bands, one of which is the Honour Band led by internationally renowned conductor, Dr Eric Hammer from USA. THE STAR OF DREAMS

The history of the United States has taken many paths on many fronts. The legend and lore of the “Old West,” a significant part of this heritage, is perhaps no more prevalent than in Texas, the Lone Star State. It is this land of American courage and pioneer dreams that was the inspiration for this work.

With the mission bells ringing in the air, the work opens with a bold fanfare. The fanfare gives way to the fast and furious Los Diablos Tejanos(Bar 19). Aptly titled, this section of the work is based upon the significant contributions and sacrifices of the Texas Rangers. The Mexican Army referred to these skilled and relentless lawmen as “The Texas Devils.”

The natural beauty of the state is often overlooked when one speaks of Texas. From the pristine shores on the Gulf of Mexico to the Hill Country, from the urban towers that seem to reach to the sky to the desert southwest, Texas is a land of geographic contrasts. Perhaps the visual image that ties together these various regions together is the annual appearance of the bluebonnets, the state flower. As one gazes upon the fields in shades of blue(Bar 110), time seems to stop as the color stands in stark contrast to the landscape. The quiet and reflective center of the work is titled In The Fields of Blue as our journey through Texas time and space continues.

Stampede…(Bar 132). the mere mention of the word conjures images of amazing power as the longhorns blaze across the range in clouds of dust. However, in a more historic interpretation, the “stampede” west by the early pioneers laid the foundation for a nation that now reaches from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans. The final section of the work entitled Stampede celebrates the vision and perseverance of those early pioneers who helped to forge a new nation.

2008 Fuhua Cultural Night is damn successful. I bet the Band receive the loudest applause and cheering! Main band played very nice! The Alumni too! CHEERS!

I still remember around one year ago, I had this idea of setting up the alumni band. And way long before I even graduate, my seniors (that is your alumni) had already proposed to the school several times about this alumni band idea and got rejected. The ever first reason that came into my mind when I wanted to set up the alumni band is because I THOUGHT the alumni will support this band, and cus THEY WANTED IT, I WANTED IT, and also not forgetting our very own resident conductor, Ms Samantha Chong's support, that's why I set up this alumni band. For the alumni, and for the future kids that are still in the main band. The alumni did show their support, gave me very definite answers, that's why I thought maybe it would be possible.

On the first alumni practice, many of your/my seniors came. And after the first practice, the member count dropped to half of the original number, and slowly, nobody wanted to come.

You guys wanted it in the first place, we tried our best to give you whatever we can request from the school, even Miss Lai, she helped us out in many many ways. But who would actually really see all the "behind-the-scenes"?! Who would actually really appreciate what we did for the alumni band. Not many, I can easily count them with my 10 fingers. You guys have to be responsible for what you've promised initially, to the band. It's not easy managing an alumni band when even our very own school doubts us. WE WOULD LOVE TO PROVE THEM WRONG IN DOUBTING OUR ABILITY AND SHOW THEM WHAT WE'VE GOT.

I am glad to say that, the alumni band sounded pretty decent, it's just that some parts are missing due to the shortage of members. You guys come and go happily without informing, and the ones who're going to face all the really "NICE MUSIC" and sarcasms from the schools is TKK. I've been tied down by ITP recently and I sincerely thank KOK KEONG for doing every single thing that he did for the alumni.

I don't know whether is this supposed to be told or not to be told, but the rehearsal on this coming tuesday is actually a.. sort of like an "audition" to see whether we're good enough to perform in the Fuhua Cultural Night concert, and we knew it only TODAY. I seriously hope the alumni who're performing with us, to attend this rehearsal. If you ever needed any form of excuses from school/ work, please contact seklin or kok keong.

I thank those who're still together with us, but i'm not gonna hate those who left without a word.

This one photo I took, at around 8.45pm +/- 5 minutes on Monday (10 March 2008), when everybody is outside the AVA Room, and all stuffs in the AVA Room are packed nicely (except for these stuffs) and I'm the only one left in the AVA Room doing a double check for any LEFTOVERs as well as Boon Siong preparing to close the Room.

JUST ONE NOT SO GENTLE REMINDER:

OIE! CAN YOU GUYS JUST THROW AWAY YOUR WRAPPERS STRAIGHTAWAY AFTER EATING ANOT HUH?!

The wrappers were not in this position earlier on, I rearrange them in a very nice position with my itchy hands. It was as if the table was the RUBBISH BIN when I first saw it. From the start of the practice til the end, no one even bothered to clear it after all bags and cases placed ON THE SAME TABLE were taken away. Please, make it a good habit to throw your wrappers after eating STRAIGHTAWAY. Don't wait for one another to do this kind of job, you might as well wait until the next "when-there's-band-practice" morning, then, you throw it. Ok, I'm being sarcastic over here.

The reason why I'm kicking up a big fuss about it is that, I wouldn't want this kind of things to happen again in the future practices.
